Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generally the Boston metropolitan area. Inpatient case files are created to provide a record of the commitment, diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients admitted to the center.
